 Health Benefits of Probiotics

Probiotics have become increasingly popular during the last decade as a result of the continuously expanding scientific evidence pointing to their beneficial effects on our health. It has been well documented in literature that probiotics may help with bowel disorders such as lactose intolerance, antibiotic associated diarrhea, allergies, infections and immune system support. Further evidence suggests that probiotics may help with blood pressure control and cholesterol levels. This may prevent a deadly disease like coronary heart disease from occurring. Research is continuing to determine all the benefits probiotics offer. One interesting study has determined a link between our gut and mental health. It found that probiotics may be useful to treat depression, anxiety, and memory loss.

Probiotics literally translate to “for life.” They work by adding good bacteria and yeast into your microbiome. In your gut, there is a delicate balance of good bacteria and bad bacteria. Sometimes, when we get sick, our bad bacteria can overpower our good bacteria, leading to troubling symptoms. By taking probiotics, we are helping out microbiome maintain its synergy.

Infants may also experience specific benefits of probiotics. Remember babies, unlike adults, have undeveloped immune systems which may make them more susceptible to disease. Probiotics may help babies prevent infections, avoid gastrointestinal symptoms, and even treat baby colic and immune conditions such as eczema.

Remember not all probiotics are the same! When choosing a probiotic, look for one for your specific health needs. As stated previously, probiotics may be used to prevent or treat bowel complications, boost the immune system, maintain gut health, or even help with inflammation and allergies. After determining your specific needs, research the specific strain that is needed for prevention or treatment. Knowing the specific strain of bacteria allows you to make the right choice for your health. Remember to always check what the product can be used for before purchasing!

After finding your strain, you must find a good probiotics manufacturer. It is always best to find products that have clinically studied ingredients. You can determine if a manufacture uses high quality ingredients if it states they are GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) registered facilities. The last step is to assess the daily dose needed for therapy. To do this, review the Colony Forming Units (CFUs) on the label; this tells you how much bacteria you are receiving in each dose. A good estimate is to have at least 1 Billion CFU. All of this information will be provided in the Supplement Facts on the label.

Remember having a healthy microbiome is extremely important, and probiotics may provide an additional helping hand in improving your quality of life. Please always ask your healthcare provider before starting probiotics.
